Police said that New Mexico State men’s basketball player Mike Peake was “lured” to the University of New Mexico campus by four New Mexico students before he shot and killed one of them after an altercation.
That altercation in Albuquerque led to the New Mexico State-New Mexico game to be postponed on Saturday. Peake was also shot, and is currently in “stable” condition.
New Mexico State police said Sunday that Peake was “lured” to a UNM residence hall on campus by four students with the intent to “assault him.” Brandon Travis, 19, and three others allegedly then confronted Peake around 3 am on Saturday before Travis shot him.
Police said Peake, who also had a firearm, then shot Travis, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
It’s unclear why the four UNM students wanted to “lure” Peake to campus outside of wanting to “assault him,” or if they knew Peake prior to the altercation. A 17-year-old female was arrested and charged with aggravated battery and conspiracy, per the Las Cruces Sun News. Two others have been identified, though charges have not been filed. An investigation is still ongoing.
Peake was not charged, and police called him a “victim” in their statement.
Peake has averaged nine points and 3.5 rebounds per game this season, his second with the Aggies.
“The entire Lobo community is shaken by this incident, and we mourn the death of one of our students and the injuries sustained by another individual,” New Mexico President Garnett Stokes said in a statement. “The impact of this experience is life-changing for so many and will extend far beyond expressions of grief and sense of loss — and far beyond the Lobo community. I cannot express how deeply saddened I am by this tragedy on so many levels.”
