Santa Fe Christian takes down rival Christian with its Wing-T offense

No jealousy. No pouting.

That’s because Santa Fe Christian does what it does – runs the Wing-T – as does every team in the county.

Friday night at Clairemont High, the Eagles stormed 44 times for 274 yards and threw 136 times, defeating Christian 28-15.

With the win, SFC improved to 4: 0, while Christian fell to 3: 1.

“We’ve been playing together since middle school,” said SFC running back Colton Lehberg, who checks in at 5’7. “We have so much trust in one another. We trust each other. We are close friends. We have each other’s back. So we compete the way we do. ”

Lehberg had six carries for 63 yards, including a 22-yard run and a pair of 17-yarders.

“I’m a little guy so I like to hide behind our big linemen and then make cuts.”

Cooper Whitton led SFC with 17 carries for 103 yards and a TD. Luca Torti added eight carries for 37 yards and quarterback Thomas Greupner had eight carries for 30 yards and completed 6 of 8 passes for 103 yards.

Torti also had a 33-yard degree.

“We had an amazing week of training,” said Whitton. “This is a special week. Christian is a big rival and they are very good. ”

Whitton also made several great games in defense, including hitting two passes.

“We’re a small school (Division III), so pretty much everyone goes both ways.”

Christian quarterback Jake Bailey, who had 12 rushs for 57 yards and completed 13 of 26 passes for 148, was injured late in the third quarter and was taken off the field in an ambulance.

Christian trainer Danny Mitchell said Bailey pulled a helmet back but moved all of his limbs.

“We made a lot of big mistakes, turned the ball,” said Mitchell. “SFC is really good. You are one of the top coaching teams in the district.
“We’ll see how Jake is doing, but we fought a quarterback until the end.

Left-handed Josh Herber was thrown into the breach and completed 4 of 7 passes for 40 yards.

Christian lost three fumbles in the first half, two promising drives, the other at the end of half after a few laterals.

The game’s first score was a vintage SFC drive in which the Eagles covered 80 yards in 11 games with just one pass. Whitton scored on a 2 yard run.

Christian came right back with a five-game drive that covered 53 yards.

The score came on a 3 yard fumble return from Ryan De Los Reyes after Jake Davila completed a pass to Joey Merritt.

SFC took the lead after Will Marenghi found a Christian fumble with the Patriots 41.

A halfback pass from Tori to Zachary Marshall hit 33 yards. The next game, Torti went 10 yards for the result.

Santa Fe Christian wandered the county in search of a place for a night game and had to travel to Clairemont High from his home in Solana Beach.

With no light on the campus field, SFC usually plays on Friday or Saturday afternoons.

In hopes of joining the Friday Night Lights circuit, it recently turned to La Costa Canyon, Carlsbad or Torrey Pines for night games. However, all of these schools hosted games on Friday nights.

So SFC Athletic Director Doug Miller made a few calls and secured Clairemont, an excellent facility but a 15-mile excursion on I-5.

“Next year we hope to have permanent light on our field,” said Miller. “We followed all the rules and did what we had to do, so we think it will happen.”
