The No. 16 Santa Fe Saints will begin their season under 15-year head coaching by Johnny Wiggs.

Johnny Wiggs began his college career in Valencia and then transferred to Santa Fe College. He later attended the University of Florida and helped them win the 1988 SEC championship and their first trip to the College World Series.

As the Saints enter this season as one of baseball’s top junior community colleges, they want to pick up where they left off last season as they finished it with an overall record of 33-13.

The 2020-21 season saw the Saints reach the FCSAA State Tournament for the sixth time.

The Saints want to qualify for the postseason, which begins in May. That puts them in the top four teams in the state. They have an experienced squad this season as they bring back 16 players from last year’s squad, including two of their four starting pitchers.

Mitchell Gross, No. 2 starting pitcher from last year’s roster, is signed to Georgia Southern and Lance Bolton, who helped the Saints return to the state tournament after throwing a shutout game.

Under Wiggs’ management, the Saints have won nine conference championships. They won their last four out of five conference trips.

The Santa Fe Saints begin their season this Friday, January 28 when they host Hillsborough Community College. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. The game is free to the public and can also be followed on the Santa Fe Sports Network.
