The Department of Public Education is trying datacasting

The school districts of Bernalillo, Cuba, Pojoaque, Silver City and Taos are eligible to participate in a pilot program with New Mexico Public Broadcasting and TV broadcaster KNME that could bring data receivers into the homes of students who do not have broadband internet access.

Each district that chooses to do so will identify 100 families living in areas where there is no internet connection and give them card-sized receivers for free.

Recipients would “transfer” classroom materials to a student’s laptop computer given out by the school. Public broadcasters and KNME install and test transmitters for the project.

The pilot is funded with government pandemic aid and is designed to help fulfill a judge’s orders from the Yazzie / Martinez consolidated lawsuit.
