Sprinter Kira Brownell signs up in the state of New Mexico

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is a proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s college recruiting channel and all of the engagement news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them along the way.

Kira Brownell, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, has announced that she will swim and study at New Mexico State University from the 2022-2023 school year.

“I am pleased to announce that I will continue my academic and swimming career at New Mexico State University. I’d like to thank my family, as well as my club and high school coaches, for believing in me and helping make swimming possible in college. Cant wait to be an aggie! #AggieUp “

Brownell swims for Capital City Aquatics out of Cheyenne, WY. During the summer she achieved numerous long-distance bests at the Western Zone Senior Championships. These best times included the 50 (27.63), 100 (1: 01.68) and 200 (2: 13.23) freestyles, 100 (1: 08.12) and 200 (2: 32.90) backs, 100 butterfly (1: 14.52) and 200 IM (2: 32.70).

She continued her success through this fall as she had a very successful high school season at Central High School. At the Wyoming Girls’ High School Championships 4A (large schools), she posted best times in the 50s freestyle (23.67) and 100 in the back (56.00). During these times both state titles won. Her 50 freestyle time also earned her her first futures cut.

Your best Short Course Yards times are:

  • 50 freestyle: 23.67
  • 100 freestyle: 52.30
  • 200 Freestyle: 1: 56.18 (1: 54.98 alt. Adjusted)
  • 100 backs: 56.00
  • 200 back: 2: 10.04
  • 200 IM: 2: 09.59

New Mexico State University is a public university in Las Cruces, NM. The school is a member of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) in NCAA Division I. The New Mexico state women finished second out of eight teams at the 2021 WAC Championships. They were only nine points behind the conference champion Northern Arizona.

Based on her best times, Brownell has the potential to instantly impact the team at the conference level. They had their best times in the A-finals of the 50s freestyle and 100s back and the B-finals of the 100s and 200s freestyle.

Brownell will arrive on campus next fall as a member of the Class of 2026 along with the Sprint Freestyler Katie Rink and distance freestylers Naomi Slee. She comes just in time for the team to do their fastest backstroke. Maude Boily-Dufour, although it may take a fifth year due to the COVID-19 eligibility waiver.
