LAS CRUCES – Winter vacation celebrations are just around the corner with fun, family-friendly events in Las Cruces, Mesilla, and surrounding southern New Mexico.

Las Cruces City Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony

The annual public tree lighting in Plaza de Las Cruces, 100 N. Main St., will take place on Saturday, December 4th, from 6pm to 8pm, hosted by the city of Las Cruces. The actual lighting of the tree takes place at 7:00 p.m. Live music by the Las Cruces band Unlyshed, food trucks, giveaways and activities will be available for attendees.

Christmas tree lighting in Mesilla

The city of Mesilla’s Christmas tree lighting is scheduled for Friday, December 3, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Students from Mesilla Elementary, Acton Academy, Zia Middle School Choir and Mayfield High School Choir will all perform in the historic Old Mesilla Square.

MEGA Hanukkah in the plaza

Chabad of Las Cruces will host the 12th annual lighting of the tallest menorah in southern New Mexico on Sunday, November 28th at 4:30 pm in the Plaza de Las Cruces. The event is a celebration of the first night of Hanukkah.

Entertainment includes live music, latkes, donuts, games, crafts, freebies, and a Chanukah pop-up shop. Odd-Lab Entertainment will perform the fire show. Everyone is very welcome.

The Night of Lights at New Mexico State University

Visit NMSU main campus on Sunday, December 5th, from 5pm to 8pm to see a Luminaria exhibit. Lights will be placed along the International Mall and around the student union Corbett Center.

Silver City’s illuminated Christmas parade

Silver City MainStreet’s 31st Annual Lighted Christmas Parade is scheduled for Sunday, November 27th at 7pm in downtown Silver City. Carriages, vintage cars, hiking groups and others will fill the parade. There is no specific theme this year and first, second and third place winners will receive MainStreet gift cards.

Jingle and Mingle Down Candy Cane Lane of Western New Mexico University

The WNMU’s annual holiday event, Jingle and Mingle, is scheduled for Friday, December 3, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in Regents Square on the University’s campus in Silver City. The event is hosted by the university’s cultural department. This year’s theme is “Candy Cane Lane”.

Participants can enjoy live music, handicrafts, games, holiday treats, Christmas tree displays, a competition with ugly sweaters, and a performance by Santa Claus and his elves. WNMU President Dr. Joseph Shepard will also read ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas’.

Vacation films in the Rio Grande Theater

Check out some family-friendly movies in downtown Las Cruces at the Rio Grande Theater. Doors open one hour before the start of the film.

  • December 4th at 8pm – “The Polar Express” ($ 5 entry)
  • December 11th at 12 noon – “The Muppet Christmas Carol” ($ 1 entry)
  • December 11th at 7pm – “It’s a Wonderful Life” ($ 5)
  • 12.12. at 3 p.m. – The Mesilla Valley Chorale presents “Carols Old and New”

Santa Claus arrives at the Mesilla Valley Mall

Santa Claus will be visiting Mesilla Valley Mall from November 26th to December 24th this year. Parents can bring children and fur babies to take their photos with the big man himself.
