Yellow flag hoisted on the last morning of the Balloon Fiesta

ALBUQUERQUE, NM (KRQE) – Balloon Fiesta officials are currently holding a pilot briefing in Albuquerque on the ninth and final day of the International Balloon Fiesta. Due to the wind, the twilight patrol was canceled this morning and the yellow flag was hoisted. Officials at the pilots briefing said that when balloons end up flying, there will be only one balloon wave instead of two. Balloon officers will continue to monitor the winch.

Strong storm hits New Mexico on Sunday

The weather has become increasingly important to the event over the past few days as the Saturday morning mass ascent turned into a static display and the balloon glow turned into candlelight on Saturday evening. We have a deep depression right over the state this morning. This affects our weather in several ways. First, it creates a lot of lift for the air, which gives way to strong unpredictable winds at altitude. Unfortunately, that doesn’t bode well for the last day of the balloon fiesta. It also draws colder air from the Rockies into our state.

Yellow flag. Officials monitor the wind at Balloon Fiesta Park.

As this is the last day of the fiesta, the list of events is smaller than on the previous days. There will be a final chainsaw carving exhibition at 8:00 am
