YMCA holds Trunk or Treat, Thriller event

The YMCA of Eastern Delaware County will hold a Trunk or Treat event at its Ridley YMCA location, 900 South Ave., Secane, Friday, Oct. 29. Children can come to the back lot of the Ridley YMCA, dressed in costume, to enjoy trick or treating and safe treats from Halloween-inspired cars. The event will also feature monster mash dancing and a healthy snack for the children.

The YMCA of Eastern Pennsylvania will host a Halloween Thriller event, 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23 at the Springfield YMCA, 194 W. Sproul Rd., Springfield. Children can enjoy pumpkin decorating, singing Halloween songs, learning Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” dance and receiving treats. Everyone is welcome.

Wallingford Presbyterian hosts Trunk or Treat

Wallingford Presbyterian Church (WPC), 110 E. Brookhaven Road, Wallingford will host a Trunk or Treat event 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24.

The WPC upper parking lot will be filled with cars and trucks, decked out for Halloween with treats to distribute. Scout Troop 277 will sell hot dogs from the grill and bottled water. WPC is an approved UNICEF site, so contributions will be accepted. Prizes will be awarded for best decorated trunks.

Linvilla Orchards holds costume parade Sunday

Linvilla Orchards, 137 W. Knowlton Road., Middletown, will hold its annual costume parade, noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24.

Participants can compete for the title of best costume in the Delaware Valley. Prizes will be awarded for all ages. Each child that participates will receive a treat and our judges will pick the top three of each age group. There will be one grand prize winner who will receive $100 in Linvilla Cash. Cat Nook Café holds Meow-O-Ween party

Pumpkin Patch benefits literacy and Navajo farmers

The annual Pumpkin Patch at Christ Church, 104 Nevin St., Ridley Park, is bursting at the seams this year with an array of pumpkins of every size and variety. The pumpkin patch is open, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, now through Oct. 31.

The pumpkins came all the way from the Navajo Indian Reservation in Farmington, New Mexico. Each pumpkin purchase supports Navajo Nation agriculture another season.

Additionally, twelve percent of this year’s proceeds will be donated to the Kara Barnard Youth Literacy Fund. The fund promotes youth literacy and gets books in the hands of children and families in need. The church will also host a book drive at the Pumpkin Patch for new and gently used children and youth books. Donations can be dropped off during Pumpkin patch hours. Glenolden Library announces Halloween activities

Glenolden Library, 211S. Llanwellyn Ave., Glenolden, invites children ages 11 and below to come in costume for an evening of Halloween activities, 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28. The event will have pumpkin painting, stories, crafts, refreshments and more. Children can pick up a ticket to the event by stopping by the library.

John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge holds wildlife costume walk

The John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum will hold a Wildlife Costume Walk, noon Sunday, Oct. 31. Families can meet under the pavilion in costume at 1 p.m. for a fun and relaxing walk. The event is pet friendly. No registration is required. The Refuge will also host an “Archery and Wildlife Spooktacular” 4-6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29. Families are welcome with kids age 8 and up are welcome to participate in a special spooky time on the archery range. No registration or equipment are required. Upper Darby holds Trunk or Treat event

Upper Darby will host its annual Trunk or Treat event, 4-9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, at Arlington Cemetery, 2900 State Rd. Upper Darby. Back by popular demand, this event, Parking will be at Upper Darby High School, Drexel Hill Middle School and the Upper Darby Kindergarten Center.

Times are: 4-6 p.m. for children six and under, and children with special needs; and 6-9 p.m. for all other children. Gates close at 8 p.m.

Springfield Mall presents Halloween vendor and crafters fair

The Springfield Mall, 1250 Baltimore Pike, Springfield, will hold a two-day Halloween-themed vendor and crafters fair, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23 and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24.

Not-So-Spooky Story Time held in Rose Tree Park

The Media-Upper Providence Free Library will host three sessions of a Not-So-Spooky Story Time, 11 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and noon Tuesday, Oct. 26 at Rose Tree Park, 1671 N. Providence Road, Upper Providence.
Children, ages 2-4, can come in their Halloween costumes and read “I Spy a Skeleton” by Walter Wick.

Participants will be joined by Delaware County librarians and Rotary members who will have tricks and treats. Delaware County Annual Halloween Parade set for Oct. 30

The 55th Annual Delaware County Halloween Parade will begin 1 p.m. at State and Edgmont Sts. Media, Saturday, Oct. 30, and continue down State Street. Bands, mascots, floats, marching units, sports teams, scouts, antique cars, homecoming queens, clowns, cheerleaders and other imaginative groups are welcome to join the parade to spread cheer and Halloween fun in the community.

The parade is coordinated by Town Talk Newspapers, a part of the Delaware County News Network, and sponsored by The Dream Team. Rain date is Sunday, Oct. 31.

Neumann University hosts Halloween drive-in movie night

Neumann University will present a free movie under the stars with an exclusive showing of Hocus Pocus beginning at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 29. Registration is limited and spots must be reserved online. Families are welcome and signs will direct to the viewing parking lot which will open at 7 p.m. to get everyone parked and ready. Hope Community Church presents Trunk or Treat

Hope Community Church, 19 E. Ridley Ave., Ridley Park, will present Trunk or Treat, 3-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23. Rain date will be Oct. 24. Norwood’s Haunted Park planned for Oct. 22-23

Norwood will hold its Haunted Park in the park at the bottom of Amosland and Winona Ave., 7-9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22 and Saturday, Oct. 23.

Delaware County Symphony performs Haunting Halloween concert

The Delaware County Symphony will present a chilling Halloween-themed concert, 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 31 in Meagher Theater at Neumann University, Aston. The concert is the second in the symphony’s chamber series, and will feature pieces showcasing the spookier side of classical music, such as Saint-Saens’s Danse Macabre and Berlioz’s March to the Scaffold.

Children under 12, accompanied by a paying adult, will receive free admission to the concert along with a Halloween trick-or-treat goodie bag.

Culbertson PTO presents Pumpkin Festival

The Culbertson Elementary School PTO, 3530 Goshen Road, Newtown Square, will present its annual Pumpkin Festival, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23. The event will include games, prizes, inflatables, raffles, food trucks and more. Everyone is welcome to the outdoor event.

VFW 928 invites community to Trunk-or-Treat event

The Herbert W. Best VFW Post 928, 1805 MacDade Blvd., Folsom, will hold a free community Halloween party for children up to ten-years-old, 6-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22. The rain date is Saturday, Oct. 23. The VFW will supply hot dogs, cookies, and punch for everyone.

Decorated vehicles are needed to participate. Prizes will be awarded to the best and most clever vehicle. All cars must be parked by 4:30 p.m. and decorating finished by 5:50 p.m. All vehicles must also supply their own candy or trinkets to distribute. The VFW requests that no candy has nuts. Ridley Township Library will hold a Halloween neighborhood scavenger hunt, 1-3:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24. People can gather a team and their smart phone and earn points finding scary things in the neighborhood. Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams.

St. John Chrysostom, 617 Providence Road, Wallingford will host a sensory-friendly Trunk or Treat event 6-7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23. Volunteers are needed to decorate their cars. Costumed runners invited to participate in Ridley Run

The Ridley Educational Foundation and the Ridley YMCA will hold the annual Ridley Run on Saturday, Oct. 30, beginning at 8 a.m. sharp.  This event is a run, or walk, from the YMCA, 900 South Avenue in Secane to Ridley High School, 901 Morton Ave., Folsom.  As a bonus, this year the event includes a costume contest, refreshments and other surprises.

Awards will be given to the top three males and top three female overall runners. A finisher’s medal and t-shirt will be given to all participants, and there is a trophy for the Ridley school with the most participation.
This is a point-to-point race. Runners can park at Ridley High School, check in and register beginning at 7 a.m., and then be transported by bus to the YMCA where the race will begin.

Pre-check-in and on-site registration will be held at the Ridley Area YMCA 5-10 p.m. Oct. 28 and 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 29.

Cost is $25 until Oct. 29; and $30 on race day. Registration can be done online at http://runtheday.org, or in person at the Ridley, Lansdowne or Springfield YMCA at the front desk.

Norwood UM Church holds Trunk or Treat event

Norwood United Methodist Church, 315 Chester Pike, Norwood, will hold a Trunk or Treat event 6-6:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23. Children are invited to this pre-Halloween fun, but no scary or evil costumes are allowed. The event will be held at the Cavanagh’s Funeral Home parking lot, 301 Chester Pike, Norwood, next to church. In case of rain, event will be canceled. Chester Police Department holds candy giveaway, outdoor movie

The Chester Police Department will present Trunk or Treat for kids of all ages, Saturday, Oct. 30, at the Chester Police Station, 160 E. Seventh St., Chester. A candy give-away will be held from 4-7 p.m. An outdoor movie will follow from 7:30- 9:30 p.m.

Sharon Hill Fire Co. conducts candy check on Halloween night

On Halloween night, Sharon Hill Fire Co.’s volunteers, along with members of the Sharon Hill Police Department, will conduct a candy check and hand out candy to trick-or-treaters. There will be a few scares up their sleeves as well. The annual event is being held 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 31 at Sharon Hill Fire Co., 230 Sharon Hill Ave., Sharon Hill.

Volunteers will closely examine the candies and check for anything unusual in appearance such as tiny pinholes or tears in wrappers, and spoiled or unwrapped items.

Community members can stop by this same night to learn about volunteer opportunities. Anyone, age 14 or older, who is interested in volunteering at the fire stat can talk with members and get their questions answered. Sharon Hill Fire Co. is actively recruiting for firefighters, ages 18 and older; junior firefighters, ages 16-17; and cadets, ages 14-15.

In addition to the candy check, families should also consider the following tips from the National Fire Protection Association when it comes to Halloween safety: Use battery-operated candles in jack-o-lanterns instead of real flames; Provide children with flashlights to carry or glow sticks to use as light; When choosing costumes, stay away from long, trailing fabric; Dried flowers, cornstalks and crepe paper can easily catch fire. Keep all decorations away from open flames and other heat sources such as lightbulbs and heaters.
