Ledes from the Land of Enchantment

First annual Las Cruces Utilities Skills Rodeo brings a chance to shine

It was an opportunity for staff to let their hair off and show off their moves at the First Annual Las Cruces Utilities (LCU) Skills Rodeo on September 24th. The movements included how well they could navigate a skid steer loader and secure trailers, maneuver an excavator, and manipulate a forklift.

“Everyone worked so hard during the pandemic, so we wanted everyone to get together on a Friday, have great tacos and have a little friendly contest,” said LCU director Delilah Walsh. “It’s a way to say thank you – and give them the right to brag when they show what they can do.”

“I would not have missed that,” said the chairman of the LCU board of directors from William Little, who was also a juror for the Trucks & Trailers event. Commissioner Dr. Harry Hardee and his wife Loye Hardee were present.

The winners were:

Forklift: Juan Carrillo, Gas Temporary Worker

Skid Steer Loaders: Jose Quintela, Water Distribution Team Leader

Truck trailer:

Women: Sheridan Ross, Office Manager

Men (non-CDL): Ignacio “Nacho” Mondragon, Senior Heavy Equipment Operator
