Santa Fe College Promises New Opportunities for Students at Fall Convocation

August 20, 2021 – Santa Fe College opened the 2021-2022 academic year at its Fall Assembly on Friday morning. During the event, SF President Paul Broadie II, Ph.D. welcomed students, faculty, and staff back to college, and encouraged the college community to excel academically, engage socially, and dream big and achieve something.

The President announced the expansion of several grants and the launch of several initiatives that will put our new strategic plan into action. SF Achieve will promote a higher education culture in our community. The program will work in all public high schools in the college’s service district to provide students with the disciplines necessary to succeed in a college setting. Students who complete the program are eligible for SF Achieve Scholarships, which removes barriers for our local high school graduates looking to attend college.

The college is also working on a teaching and learning center that enables faculties to work together as peers to promote best practices and develop methodologies to increase academic achievement. The Center for Teaching and Learning was inspired by the Faculty’s participation in Achieving the Dream.

The convocation also included recognizing new employees, retirees and employees celebrating milestones in their service anniversaries, including 30-year-old SF employee Sari Sanborn and 35-year-old employees Kim Johnson and Korona Skipper. A full list of new employees and milestones can be found here.

The college recognized awardees including You Are Santa Fe Award Winner Sharon Whitcraft, Alan J. Robertson Medallion Award Winner Rhonda Morris, and Lifetime Achievement Award Winner Carol Thomas. A full list of the awardees can be found here.

The event was attended by keynote speaker Scott Burrows, an SF alumnus. Burrows shared his personal story when he went from college athlete to quadriplegic after being in a car accident at the age of 19 never ceasing to be a student. One hundred signed copies of his book Vision Mindset Grit are available. The first 100 employees to request a copy will be sent via college mail.

While the physical distancing meant most staff saw the call-up virtually and there was no buffet, the first 300 people to fill out this form will receive a voucher for a 6-inch submarine, chips, cookies, and a bottle of water from the subway on the Northwest campus of SF. They also receive a gift package with stickers and magnets. Use them to promote a higher education culture in our community!
