Santa Fe Trail users will now be able to enjoy a new mural painted along the wall of the Brookside Drive bridge.

The mural has been in the works for months, with Woodrow Wilson High School students taking the lead on the art. It was spearheaded by Eva Braasch, who helped organize the project as part of her Girl Scouts Gold Award.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held June 16 to introduce the community to the finished mural. Braasch cut the ribbon.

This is just one new feature of the Santa Fe Trail. This week, the Dallas Park and Recreation Board approved the Santa Fe Trail Master Plan, which calls for many trail improvements; read more about it here.

Hollywood/Santa Monica neighbor Alex O’Neil was the mural project lead, coordinating funding and other aspects. He and his father, Pat, applied anti-graffiti coating to preserve the mural. Samuel Mortimer from Friends of Santa Fe Trail and District 14 Park Board member Rudy Karimi helped acquire proper permitting for the mural.

Woodrow teacher and art adviser Jessica Raff came up with the initial design concept. The mural reads “welcome to the Santa Fe Trail.” Here are the students who took on the painting:
