Warhawks set for educational game vs. Louisiana Christian


MONROE, La. – ULM plays its home opener 2021-22 on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. with its annual Take Flight for Education game against Louisiana Christian at Fant-Ewing Coliseum. The Warhawks are 2-0 after Saturday’s 77-60 loss at the Southern Miss, while the Wildcats are 3-1 after their 71-56 win at Centenary on Friday in their first year as a NAIA-affiliated institution.

Second year freshman Kyren Whittington has led the Warhawks through the first two competitions of the season. Whittington, who missed the final 14 games of the 2020-21 season due to injury, scored 17 points with four rebounds and a steal on Saturday at Southern Miss. She led the team at the season opener in Grambling on November 9th with 16 points, three assists and two steals.

Real freshman guard / forward Amaya Ford has impressed in her first two college games. Ford took advantage of their first career start by posting their first double double and hitting career highs with 15 points and 10 rebounds at USM. She also led the team with three steals against the Lady Eagles. Ford had 13 points and four rebounds on her college debut at Grambling on Nov. 9.

Fifth year senior striker Kierra Crockett reached double digits for the first time with 10 points on Saturday at USM in 2021-22. She added three rebounds and two steals against the Lady Eagles. It was the sixth time that Crockett had double-digit points in her ULM career.

Elementary school students will fill the stands for Tuesday’s game for the Take Flight for Education game. After missing the 2020-21 season due to COVID-19 logs, the 2021-22 annual event is returning. In the last two Take Flight for Education games, ULM defeated Millsaps, 64-56, in a 2019-20 season opening exhibition and the Warhawks led LSU-Alexandria, 93-62, 2018-19.

Louisiana Christian, formerly known as Louisiana College, enters the game on Tuesday 3-1 in the season with wins against Langston, Life University and Centenary. It is the first season of the LCU as a member of the NAIA.

The Wildcats are led by Kieyomia Benally. It averages 14.0 points per game. The 5-6 junior from Farmington, New Mexico, scored double-digit points in all four games and scored 19 points against Life on November 6th. She shoots 42.3% from 3-point distance and has at least three 3-pointers in three of four competitions, including a 3-for-3 performance at Friday’s Centenary.

Miya McKinney averages 9.3 points and the team best 5.5 rebounds per game. She had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds against Life on November 6th.
